This day trip to Moremi Game Reserve enables you to see the wonders of Botswana’s fabulous wildlife even if you are short on time.
Departing from Maun in the early morning, the game drive will pick you up at your lodge or hotel in Maun before heading to Moremi Game Reserve. Moremi Game Reserve is about 100km (62mi) from Maun, and you can expect to spend 5 to 6 hours of the day on a safari game drive. We pack breakfast and lunch with us, and assure you that the place we stop for lunch is more exciting than your usual spot at home!
The Moremi Game Reserve covers much of the eastern side of the Okavango Delta and combines permanent water with drier areas, which creates startling, beautiful, and unexpected contrasts. In Moremi, one gets marvelous views of savannah game like lions, wild dogs, and a wide variety of birds. Moremi has thickly wooded areas that are home to beautiful leopards, high chances to spot a leopard if we are lucky.
Despite covering just under 5,000 square kilometers (1,900 sq mi), Moremi is an extremely diverse reserve, combining mopane woodland and acacia forests, floodplains, and lagoons. Only about 30% of the reserve is mainland, with the bulk being within the Okavango Delta itself. Though not one of Botswana’s largest national parks, Moremi provides vistas and experiences that will be unique even for highly experienced travelers. Moremi is home to nearly 500 species of birds (from water birds to forest dwellers), and a vast array of other species of wildlife. Expect to encounter:
- Cape Buffalos
- Giraffes
- Lions
- Leopards
- Cheetah
- hyena’s
- jackals
- impala
- red lechwe
- African Wild dogs
- And more elephants!
African wild dogs are also Moremi residents, they have been the subject of a conservation research project that has operated in the area since 1989, so you might see some of the dogs wearing collars by their neck. Return to Maun late afternoon, drop-off to your accommodation.
